WEAVING in September
From a small conversation to an international collaboration
It’s going to be a very eventful September with my film Weaving: Stockholm Through the Eyes of Ukrainian Refugees.
We begin with a work-in-progress screening at Filmshop House on Governors Island on September 6, with showtimes at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. (Eventbrite Link)
Weaving follows Belarusian Swedish artist Ludmila Christeseva in Stockholm as she leads Ukrainian refugee women in collaborative textile workshops. What began as creative relief in response to Russia’s 2022 invasion has grown into a “Solidarity Sisterhood,” where weaving becomes both tradition and transformation. The film captures how these projects foster healing, resilience, and self-determination—turning trauma into Strength, community, and a shared vision of peace.
This journey began with a casual conversation with Ludmila at Times Square on a fall afternoon in 2022. Living in different countries and separated by the Atlantic, we found the collaboration surprisingly exciting. When I visited Stockholm in 2023, Ludmila welcomed me and introduced me to her team of women. At that time, they appeared exhausted and subdued. Over the past two years, as Ludmila shared footage of their activities, I’ve watched their smiles return. Witnessing that transformation has been deeply moving, and we’re eager to share these moments with audiences.
The film was made possible thanks to the generous volunteer work of our creative team: Stockholm-based cinematographers Ruslan Badykov and Mehdi Razi, Izmir-based sound engineer and composer Lara Bora, and colorist Deniz Aktunç.
While we are finalizing September’s events, what’s confirmed is a month-long showcase at Filmshop House on Governors Island. We will also screen the work-in-progress film at A Night at La Nacional, hosted by the Bronx World Film, on September 16. Additional events will be announced as details become available.
We are also seeking distribution partners to bring the film into festival circuits, relevant conferences, and community screenings. We invite you to be part of this journey.
A Night at La Nacional
